Splash Leisure Pool to benefit from £330k Refurbishment

The Splash Leisure Pool in Rushden is set to benefit from some improvements by East Northamptonshire Council.splash

The £330k project will include the replacement of essential mechanical equipment to enable the pool to remain open for future use, new lockers and improved changing areas and showers.

To accommodate the improvement works, Splash will temporarily close from 27 July 2014 for approximately eight weeks.  Customers are encouraged to use the pool at the Nene Centre in Thrapston and enjoy summer activities at the Pemberton Centre in Rushden.

East Northamptonshire Council’s appointed observer to the Aspirations Wellbeing board, Cllr Glenvil Greenwood-Smith, says:

“We appreciate the inconvenience of changes to term-time swimming lessons for swimmers and parents so that is why the pool will temporarily close during the summer holidays which are usually a more flexible time for sporting activities.”

Peter Williams, Chief Executive of Aspirations Wellbeing who manage the facility, adds:

“The Splash Leisure Pool is a great venue with very loyal customers and this refurbishment will provide them with much improved facilities.

“We’d like to thank the public in advance for their patience during the closure period and hope that the added benefits of the refurbishment work as well as the summer activities available at our other two sites will make up for the closure.”

Past Chairman raises Thousands for Charity

Cllr Pam Whiting was delighted to hand over a cheque to Alzheimer’s Research for £1,850 which was raised in her role as East Northamptonshire Council Chairman last year.

Pam’s main fundraisers as civic head of the council were afternoon tea at The Bridge Hotel in Thrapston and a civic dinner which was held at The Courtyard in Stanwick.  Monies raised were topped up with raffles and donations.

The contribution will help with research into the causes of Alzheimer’s which is being carried out in Cambridge. This will hopefully lead to a prevention treatment which could help many people.

During the year, Pam also held an International Ladies Day Lunch at Stanwick Lakes which raised £200 for Water Aid, a Boobs and Brass concert at Higham Ferrers church which raised £1,350 for Breast Cancer Charity and £1,560 for the Bell Appeal at St Mary’s which will help with work to restore and re-hang the bells.

Pam and George thoroughly enjoyed the year as Chairman and Consort, visiting many different places, travelling over 5,000 miles, attending 160 events, making new friends, not only in this district but further afield and just being involved with many different communities.

Pam said: “A sincere thank you goes to all of you who have supported my various functions; the total raised over the year is fantastic and I could not have done it without your support. Thank you all very much indeed.”

June 2014 – So it begins…

As Thrapston residents, my family adore the town and spend a lot of time here, both leisure time and of course work time researching projects for Nene Local, interviewing people, and speaking to local businesses.

Thrapston, in our opinion has loads to offer!  We do hear cries of “What can you do in Thrapston?” or “Oh I had to go to Kettering to buy ‘X’ as you can’t find it in Thrapston” so we thought, we’d set ourselves a challenge!

Today I am (very) recently engaged and have set a date one year from now.  Our challenge is to source every last detail of our wedding day in Thrapston.  Venue, dress, ring, favours, photographs, hair, flowers, etc – you name it and we’re going to find a Thrapston business to source it from.

A Little Thrapston History before we begin…

Thrapston once called Trapestone in the 11th century and then Thrapeston in the 13th and 14th centuries.

The parish of Thrapston is low-lying land being only about 100 ft. above sea level. The subsoil is alluvium, near the bed of the River Nene, which forms the western boundary of the parish. The Thorpe brook forms part of the eastern boundary. A quarry is mentioned in 1330, and mines and quarries in a sale of the manor in 1770.  There was an ironstone quarry until recently, but the Nene Side Iron Works which once flourished no longer exists and is now a housing estate.

Thrapston is a small market town, probably owing its prosperity to its situation near the bridge over the Nene, towards which bridge several roads converge. Thrapston currently has a population of around 6500. It was almost entirely rebuilt in the 19th century, the later buildings being of red brick. A few older houses remain; a cottage in the Huntingdon Road is dated 1755, and the Baptist Chapel adjoining bears a tablet recording that “This place of Worship was built by public Subscription A.D. 1787, for the Propagation of the Gospel of Jesus Christ.” It is a plain brick building of two stories. There is also a Wesleyan Chapel in the town and of course St James’ Church.

There is a market place in the centre of the town and the church and manor house lie on its north side. The bridge over the Nene is mentioned in 1224, when Bishop Hugh of Welles granted an indulgence to travellers contributing to its repair and in 1313 Bishop Dalderby granted an indulgence for the fabric of the chapel of St. Thomas the Martyr next the Bridge of Thrapston.  In the later 14th and early 15th centuries, the bailiffs and men of Thrapston obtained several grants of pontage for the repair of the bridge. Leland about 1543 mentions a stone bridge with eight arches, but in a brief for its repair of 1664 it is said to have twenty-four arches.  The arrival of the railways in the 1840s led to an embankment being cut into this floodplain crossing. The bridge was then reduced to its present day “nine arches”.

The Leper Hospital of St. Leonard existed in the 12th and 13th centuries, but nothing is known of its history.

There was a station on the Northampton and Peterborough branch of the London Midland and Scottish Railway, which crosses the parish. Thrapston Mill is on the river Nene, to the south of the town. A water mill is mentioned as parcel of the manor in 1336 and 1355. The parish was enclosed by Act of Parliament in 1780.  The Mill is now Mill Marina and owned by Ting Dene developments.

Located in the High Street are many and varied shops, and in the heart of the market town, is the ornate cast iron shop front of the Tasty Bite Victorian Tea Shoppe dating from the 19th century and is one of the few remaining in Britain.

The Middle Nene Sailing Club was established in 1947 and now offers approximately 140 acres of open, unrestricted water on which to sail.

The sailing club has a good range of sailing opportunities available, which include competitive class racing, training courses, and a varied social calendar. The club also provide excellent facilities including a licensed bar, professional catering, showers, changing rooms as well as on site camping.  The Sailing Club is next to and part of the nature reserve, where a huge amount of wildlife can be spotted.

From family tree to Thatcher’s scythe-wielding killer ancestor – local history just got a lot more interesting

A local history book based on the former residents of Ringstead, Northamptonshire, has uncovered a host of fascinating facts and dark secrets – including a murderous ancestor of Margaret Thatcher herself.

When David Ball, a keen local historian, started to investigate his own family tree, it led him to the small village of Ringstead. The search for his own family, however, proved to be of less interest than the dirt he dug up on several other historic residents. David decided to bring together the ghosts of stories past in a printed collection entitled “Ringstead People,” which was produced by Cambridge-based printers Victoire Press.

David says, “I wanted to try to write the stories of ordinary people, not the landed gentry who usually fill up the pages of village histories. These people had little written about them except for Censuses from 1841, and the Parish Registers; I wanted to flesh out some of those fascinating lives for others to discover.”

Thanks to the global reach of the internet, David was able to research ancestors of villagers from Manchester to Australia, and gave context to his findings through extensive historical research, often using Northamptonshire Record Office and Northampton Central Library. An early blog about the discoveries attracted contributions from all over the world, and David has continued to build on his research.

Some of the tragic, thrilling and downright dangerous characters David uncovered include:

  • The three boys caught in a storm who sheltered in a barn and lost their lives.
  • The young man who kept a diary of his last years as he died of T.B.
  • The families who found new lives after braving the perilous voyage across the Atlantic
  • The young schoolmaster who started his career one snowy morning in January and quickly found his world unravelling so that he was forced to leave his post in May
  • The ancestor of Margaret Thatcher who killed a fellow worker with a scythe in the harvest field
  • The local butcher whose heavily pregnant mistress disappeared immediately after she was heard shouting at him that he meant to kill her

As David says, “It’s amazing how extraordinary most ordinary lives are. I tried to present the facts as best I could rather than making tenuous imaginative leaps of interpretation.”

Ringstead books produced by Victoire Press

Determined to do justice to the unknown yet remarkable lives he was uncovering, David decided to compile the stories into a high quality volume to be published for the public to share. He had the stories professionally typeset and worked with Adrian Williams at Victoire Press to get the book brought to life.

David says, “Adrian was very helpful and concerned to produce a good quality book. Although really not his job he also picked up a few errors which were corrected. I felt that we were working together to produce the best final product that we could.”

50 copies of “Ringstead People were produced at first, as a perfect bound, high quality A4 paperback book to ensure images of maps and people were as visible as possible. Another 50 were printed shortly afterwards to meet demand. Victoire’s digital printing capability ensures economy of pricing in low quantity call-offs making it a straightforward and cost-effective method.

David has now written and published “Ringstead People 2” and is keen to encourage others to take up the hobby of researching local histories. As he puts it, “I believe that having a pride in your past is part of a healthy community.”
