Safety Day success at Stanwick Lakes

This year’s Community Safety Day focussed on the UK’s favourite sport to give antisocial behaviour, domestic abuse and hate crime the red card. The annual event, organised by East Northamptonshire Council, was held at Stanwick Lakes to give invaluable advice and information on crime prevention and community safety. It was a busy, football-themed day, full of prize winning competitions.

Kyle Petchely, 11 years, winner of the penalty shoot out competition.

Kyle Petchely, 11 years, winner of the penalty shoot out competition.

Kyle Petchely, 11 years, won two match day tickets donated by Northampton Town Football Club, for scoring a huge 150 points in the penalty shoot out competition. The keepy uppy competition was won by 11 year old Fergus Jolly who scored an incredible 53 and was rewarded with a £20 gift card provided by Waitrose, Rushden.

Northampton’s George, River and Harley Wickham will be treated to afternoon tea for four, donated by Stanwick Lakes, after winning the spot the ball competition. The day included displays from the people who help keep East Northamptonshire as safe as possible. Residents and visitors loved exploring the cavalcade of vehicles brought by Northamptonshire Police and Fire Service.

Others who attended were: Community Law, ENC Water Safety, Illegal Money Lending Team, Kettering General Hospital, Nene Clinical Commissioning Group, Northamptonshire Carers, Police Recruitment, Service Six, Solve-It and Sunflower Centre.

The day also drew attention to the dangers of swimming in the lakes and rivers around the district, reminding people about the popular designs now in place in lifebelts along the River Nene to make a vandal or thief think twice before messing with the vital lifesaving equipment. High Sheriff of Northamptonshire, Anne Burnett, said: “I really enjoyed my visit to East Northamptonshire Council’s Community Safety Day.

Stanwick Lakes on a sunny Saturday in the school holidays was a great venue to bring to the public’s attention the many services being offered in the community. Competitions for the children drew them to the stalls and if they and their families learnt half as much as I did about projects being run in East Northamptonshire then it was a successful day.”

Thrapston gets Lively on a Saturday!

DSCF1914You can’t help but notice the amount of activity in Thrapston – as retailers, businesses, groups, charities and local residents all strive to make the town more vibrant.  It seems the work is paying off as a number of retailers have commented that the % of people visiting from outside the area is rocketing.

Women’s Tour brings Financial and Health Boost to the County

An independent report detailing the economic impact of the Women’s Tour has shown that the event brought almost £500,000 into Northamptonshire.

Stage one of the first-ever Women’s Tour took place on 7th May, with the Grand Depart in Oundle and an exciting stage finish in Northampton town centre.

Approximately 55,000 people lined the Northamptonshire route on the first day and a survey carried out after the event found that 54% of these spectators came from outside of the county.

It’s estimated that during stage one of the Women’s Tour, spectators spent a total of £449,812, of which £386,362 was spent in Northamptonshire. Plus a further £88,000 was spent in the county on hotel and overnight accommodation by event organisers, cyclists and media personnel.

The survey also showed that 75% of people were inspired to cycle more often after seeing the Women’s Tour.

Deputy leader of Northamptonshire County Council Councillor Heather Smith said: “We are so proud to have hosted the first stage of the inaugural Women’s Tour and pleased that it brought nearly £500,000 into Northamptonshire’s economy and showcased our beautiful county to spectators and TV viewers around the world.

“Another particularly welcome statistic is that the event inspired 75% of spectators to get on their bikes. This is great news, as one of the key reasons we supported this event was to increase the profile of sport and cycling in particular and encourage people to get more active.”

Councillor Robin Brown, county council cabinet member for public health and wellbeing said: “Cycling is an easy way for people to get more active and this can make a real difference to people’s lives.

“Physical activity is essential for good health, but in Northamptonshire only 31.4% of men and 25.6% of women meet the government guidelines of three lots of 30 mins of moderate exercise every week.

“This inactivity is becoming a serious public health problem, and is responsible for 17% of early deaths in the UK plus it costs the UK economy up to £10 billion a year.

“I’m very pleased that the Women’s Tour has inspired people to cycle more and I hope that people take up the many opportunities on offer in the county to get cycling.”WTspectators

Dr Jim Lusted, Senior Lecturer in Sport and Exercise at the University of Northampton, a key partner for the Northamptonshire stage of the Women’s Tour, said: “We know from previous research that hosting sport events like the Women’s Tour can bring enormous benefits local communities and businesses. This economic impact report is welcome because it evidences just how much economic value there is in hosting events like this; it also seems to have left a legacy by inspiring spectators to want to get on their bikes.

“What is most encouraging, however, is that female sport was able to generate such significant income which bodes well for the growth of women’s professional sports in the future and will give girls more female sporting role models to look up to and hopefully want to emulate.”wtstart

Following the Women’s Tour a wide range of cycling activities are taking place across the county, from guided bike rides to family days out as well as Northampton’s new Cycle CoNNect bike hire scheme. For more information people can visit www.northamptonshire.gov.uk/cycling

Summer time and the parking is free in East Northants

Summer holidays are here which can be an expensive time for those with children to entertain but if you’re visiting any of the six towns in East Northamptonshire, parking is one cost you don’t have to worry about.

East Northamptonshire boasts 14 free car parks with generous time allowances, so families can take their time exploring each of the six historical towns in the district.

Steven North, East Northamptonshire Council Leader, says: “We want to encourage families and visitors to enjoy our towns in the summer time without parking hitting their pocket. So, whether you’re enjoying the award winning free museum in Oundle, following the H.E Bates trail in Rushden or exploring George Washington’s ancestry in Thrapston, a parking fee is something you don’t have to factor in to your day.”

Residents and visitors may also be interested to know that five of our car parks have received the prestigious Park Mark award which is given by the Police to car parks that have achieved the standards of the Safer Parking Scheme. The scheme aims to reduce crime and the fear of crime in car parks.

Over a number of years, East Northamptonshire Council has made improvements that help to deter criminal activity and anti-social behaviour in our car parks. Areas that have been reviewed include:

  • Lighting – of a good standard so motorists can be confident leaving their vehicle
  • Management practice – good with clear auditing procedures in place
  • Parking areas – regularly cleaned and good ground maintenance
  • Pedestrian access – well lit and maintained
  • Signage – improved for motorists and pedestrians

The Duck Street, John Street, Rectory Road (Orchard Place) and Splash car parks in Rushden and the Sackville Street car park in Thrapston have met strict criteria demonstrating a safe, clean, quality parking environment – an important assurance for many families and visitors.

For more information about car parks in East Northamptonshire visit: www.east-northamptonshire.gov.uk/carparking

Young business brains take on the dragons

East Northamptonshire’s finest young business brains put their skills to the test this month at the final of the 8th Business Dragons event, hosted by East Northamptonshire Council.

The competition, organised by The East Northamptonshire College, saw teams of entrepreneurs from five local schools (Prince William School, Rushden Community College, The Ferrers School, Huxlow Science College and Manor School Sports College) pitch their ideas and business plans to a panel of local Business Dragons.

The ‘Dragons’ included Peter Waddup, Director of Scotts of Thrapston; Lorna Wiltshire, Personal Stylist and Committee Member of Rushden Town Partnership; James Maziak, Managing Director of Maziak Compressor Services Limited; Katherine White, Director of Seeds of Change and Emily Carrington, Solicitor of Borneo Martell Turner Coulston.

The final, which was held in the Council Chamber on 11 July, gave the young people the opportunity to present their original business ideas to the panel, having considered the design of the product, finance, staffing, manufacture, competition and profitability.

The Business Dragons then tested the knowledge and professionalism of each team with rigorous questioning about the benefit and effectiveness of their ideas.

The best overall winner trophy (supplied by East Northamptonshire Council and presented by the Chairman) went to Hexpad, Manor School Sports College. Their idea, entitled Energy Roads, is to place hexagonal shaped energy panels on the roads which create energy as vehicles move over them.

The best presentation trophy (supplied by Scotts of Thrapston) was awarded to Prosperity, Rushden Community College, for their pitch about a solar mobile phone charger.

Geophica, The Ferrers School, won the best innovation trophy (supplied by Maziak Compressor Services Limited). Their idea is for a Geo-Pen, a pen that highlights and scans your writing and then downloads it straight to a computer document.

Chairman of East Northamptonshire Council, Gill Mercer, said: “I was really pleased to attend this event and hear such innovative business ideas from young people in our district. Well done to all those who took part.”

In The Making of Miranda, Miranda Ponsonby tells the extraordinary story of her life.

Miranda was born as Rhodri, into one of Britain’s renowned families, and educated at a war-time boy’s prep school and one of Britain’s most ancient public schools, before being commissioned into the Household Cavalry.

After a number of tender, yet failed love stories Rhodri married and raised his own family. It was only when his 30 year marriage came to an end that Rhodri decided to undergo transgender surgery and become Miranda.

After the operation Miranda decided to retrain as a nurse, despite being the oldest woman to train as a nurse, she worked long and physically demanding hours in the coronary care unit of an NHS hospital.

Miranda had many suitors at this time, and their stories are told within the pages.  Her jocular style gains the reader’s attention and empathy, as they ‘root’ for Miranda to achieve life-long happiness.

Miranda’s life-changing decision however, estranged her forever from family and friends, and even today she still faces a daily battle against deep-rooted social prejudices.  It is Miranda’s unfailing positivity and the ability to smile in the face of adversity that makes her story – told with real humour, candour and wit – so captivating.

The book covers everything from the war with its gas chambers, recovery after rape, protecting the Queen, rocking the ‘Princess Di’ look, early NHS wards, right up to modern culture and a meeting with Boy George, along the way arise a few lovers and friends with whom Miranda has lost touch and would love the book to make its way to them just so they know how deeply she felt, but knows not how…

The astonishing journey of The Making of Miranda captures her eccentricity and strength of character in a true story that is far more colourful than fiction. This read will make you laugh out loud, sigh with understanding and sympathy and quite possibly shed more than a few tears.
