Bengal Brasserie Finalist in Awards

The Bengal Brasserie in Thrapston has been announced as a Finalist in the Carlsberg UK Northamptonshire Food & Drink Awards 2014-15

Some of the county’s finest drinking holes and dining venues are now going head to head to see who will pick up four of the prestigious venue titles in this year’s Carlsberg UK Northamptonshire Food and Drink Awards – and you can help decide who wins.

bengal brasserie

The Awards, devised by NEP and now in their sixth year, are aimed at celebrating all that is great about local produce and drink, recognising excellence within Northamptonshire’s dining venues and rewarding those who work so hard within the culinary sector.

Among the titles up for grabs are those of ‘Community Pub of the Year – Town’ and ‘Community Pub of the Year – Rural’ and, following a record number of entries received from pubs which had first been nominated by the public, the finalists are now hoping for your vote as votes alone determine the winners in those two categories.

To cast a vote for your favourite in each Awards category and to be entered into a prize draw to win a set of family tickets to see Peter Pan at Royal & Derngate this Christmas, simply complete a voting form in the venues themselves or visit the Awards’ website HERE. Voting closes Tuesday 30th September.

The results, along with those of the other 12 categories in the competition will be announced at the Awards Dinner taking place at Royal & Derngate on Thursday 16th October 2014.

We hope you will all vote and support your local eateries!

Family Firm Celebrates 50 years of Eye Care

A family-run chain of Northamptonshire optometrists is celebrating its fiftieth anniversary by pledging to carry on delivering the “personalised care” which has seen it soar to success.

Davis Optometrists was founded in 1964 when Rodney Davis, who had moved to the county from Bristol the year before, bought the original practice in Kettering.

The 86-year-old then opened branches in Thrapston and Rothwell in the 1980s. The company has since expanded outside the county, venturing to Olney 11 years ago and then moving to Market Harborough in 2012.

In the face of fierce competition from national chains, all five practices have continued to prosper by focusing on customer service and value.

The celebration coincides with National Eye Health Week, which runs from 22 to 28 September.

Rodney, who lives in Rushton and is now retired, said: “Our success has been based on offering personalised care with value and style – and that’s what we are continuing to do.

The team at Davis Optometrists celebrate 50 years with Kim Durden, Rodney Davis, Jeremy Davis and Nick Carson at the front

The team at Davis Optometrists celebrate 50 years with Kim Durden, Rodney Davis, Jeremy Davis and Nick Carson at the front

“Over the years I’ve seen the technology improve but there’s always been one clear message – respect your eyes.

“You can go and buy a pair of reading specs but there’s no way you can tell if there is an underlying problem. With some conditions, it can be too late if symptoms are not spotted early.

“It’s very good health practice to have your eyes examined every two years even if you think everything is OK, as it may not be.”

Son Jeremy Davis joined the family firm in 1974 as a dispenser and then daughter Kim Durden arrived in 1977 as an optometrist, while Rodney’s wife Dot Davis also contributed by working as a receptionist in Thrapston in the early days.

Rodney takes a back seat nowadays, leaving Kim and Jeremy alongside family friend Nick Carson to steer the practice today.

Kim, a partner optometrist, said: “My father and I worked together for years and always got on really well. When I was living at home we used to talk optics all the time and drive my mother mad.”

Davis Opticians are on Thrapston High Street and their website is www.davisopticians.co.uk.
