Trick or Treat in Thrapston

Last year Thrapston’s Trick or Treat Day went down a storm with local parents, so the event will be held on Halloween again this year.

Friday 31st October will see mini ghosties and witches excitedly entering shops on the High Street and beyond!

When asked about last years event, mums loved it as Thrapston teenies were able to get dressed up and go out in the light with mums or dads and play trick or treat like their more grown up sibblings.  Parent’s enjoyed the event as they were able to have a mooch around shops they would not normally enter and shops enjoyed seeing all the dressed up children and saying hi to potential new customers too – win:win!

This year the shops taking part are:

Yo! Sushi founder to share valuable business insights with Northamptonshire entrepreneurs

Innovators across Northamptonshire must have better access to funding to grow – according to a former Dragon’s Den star who will be delivering a keynote speech at a regional business event.

Simon Woodroffe OBE, the multi-millionaire founder of Yo! Sushi and serial entrepreneur, will be speaking at Venturefest East Midlands – a summit bringing together innovators and investors to encourage the matching of “capital with creativity”.

Simon Woodroffe OBE is calling for better access to finance

Having built the Yo! global brand from scratch, the award-winning businessman fully understands the issues facing entrepreneurs aspiring to start up and grow a business, such as funding, sales and marketing and cash-flow.

He said: “Getting finance is the biggest hurdle for small businesses. Venturefest East Midlands will help entrepreneurs and innovators to overcome this by connecting them with the right investors.

“Give entrepreneurs and innovators guidance and advice and they will be inspired, give them investment and, in the right environment, they will grow. That will develop the local economy, create jobs and regional prosperity.”

Venturefest is being brought to theregion by a range of leading partners in the public and private sectors and supported by central government funding provided by Innovate UK. The event is part of a national initiative that aims to drive the development of new business opportunities.

Michael Carr, Director of Business Engagement and Innovation Services at The University of Nottingham, and member of the Venturefest East Midlands project board, said: “It’s vitally important for businesses to innovate their products, services and processes if they are going to stay competitive. We are delighted to have Simon Woodroffe on board to pass on his invaluable experience to our entrepreneurs. I’m sure that Simon will help to inspire the next generation of regional business leaders at Venturefest.”

Venturefest East Midlands will take place on Wednesday, April 8, 2015, at the East Midlands Conference Centre, Nottingham, and is free to attend.

All innovative businesses are welcome to attend the event, where there will be a particular focus on aerospace, the creative services and digital economy, energy, healthcare, precision engineering, food and drink and transport.

There will also be opportunities for businesses to showcase achievements, network and build business skills during the lead up to the event, with a full programme of key note speakers in the Insights Theatre, Business expo, Masterclass workshops and resources and access to corporate open innovation competitions.

A mobile app has been launched featuring further information on Venturefest East Midlands and delegates can sign up now at www.venturefestem.com.

Have you had your Flu Vaccination?

This winter an extra 22,000 flu vaccinations will need to be issued to under 65s at risk, according to public health experts at Northamptonshire County Council.

Last year 35,000 people aged under 65 and at risk of developing a more severe illness received a vaccination and it’s estimated that an extra 22,000 people in this key target group would need to be vaccinated this year in order to achieve population-wide protection – known as herd immunity.

Efforts to increase the number of people who take-up a flu vaccination in Northamptonshire achieved some positive results last year, with an increased take-up in some at risk groups compared to the previous years. (See notes to editors).

As part of this GPs are urged to do everything they can to encourage people to get a flu vaccination, especially if they are in any of the eligible groups (patients aged 65 or older, patients under 65 and at risk, pregnant women, health care workers, carers, children aged two to four on 1st September 2014).

Cabinet member for public health and wellbeing, Councillor Robin Brown said: “Flu vaccinations are a proven public health intervention that deliver excellent results.

“For most healthy people, flu is unpleasant but usually they will feel better within a week or so. However, older people, the very young, pregnant women and those with underlying disease are at particular risk of severe illness if they catch flu so it’s vital that we increase the numbers of people who get vaccinated.

“And if enough people are vaccinated we can achieve herd immunity, which is particularly important in protecting people who can’t get vaccinated because they’re too ill, or are receiving treatment that damages their immune system.

“We have been working with partners to increase the focus on vaccinating people in at risk groups and did see some increases in take-up last year but it’s vital that more work is done to increase the number of people vaccinated.flu

“In particular, we need to see an increase in the number of pregnant women, carers and young children who are immunised as currently these groups have the lowest take-up.”

NHS Nene Clinical Commissioning Group is also urging those most at risk from flu in Northamptonshire to book an appointment with their GP to have a free flu vaccination.

Dr Darin Seiger, GP Chair of Nene Clinical Commissioning Group said; “Having the flu jab can help to save lives and as winter approaches now is the best time for those in the at risk eligible groups to get the free jab.

“It’s important to raise awareness of how important getting the flu jab is. Flu is a lot more serious than having a cold; it can knock you off your feet and leave you bed ridden for days and also lead to having to go to hospital. I would strongly urge those most at risk in Northamptonshire to make sure that they book an appointment with their local GP practice to get the flu vaccine.”

Habitat Improvements Continue at Internationally Important Site

With the help of funding from the SITA Trust and Heritage Lottery Fund, the Wildlife Trust for Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire and Northamptonshire has been busy making important improvements for wildlife and visitors at Irthlingborough Lakes and Meadows nature reserve.Habitat improvements at Irthlingborough Lakes and Meadows

Over the summer shallow scrapes and pools have been created for wetland birds and new ditches have been dug to make better conditions for invertebrates, waders and waterfowl. By removing willow from around some of the lake edges the Wildlife Trust is gradually returning the landscape to its former open state and making the reserve more attractive to birds such as lapwing and wigeon. Newly-created islands will also provide ideal breeding habitat for wetland birds such as terns and snipe.

And there is still more to come over the next few months. Fencing along the East Northamptonshire Greenway has already begun and once fully completed cattle will be introduced to graze parts of the site to complete the picture. Footpath re-surfacing along the old railway line may involve some temporary disruption but will make the site even more accessible to visitors once complete, particularly for those with pushchairs and wheelchairs.

Dog owners will also welcome improvements made to the designated ‘doggy dip’ area off the Greenway which will make it easier for dogs to get in and out of the water for a well-deserved swim during their walk.

Heather Procter, Nene Valley Project Manager at the Wildlife Trust for Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire and Northamptonshire, said “The work we are doing will help to create ideal conditions for existing and new species of breeding waders and wintering waterfowl at this internationally important site, as well making it an even more enjoyable place for people to visit all year round.”

Get a preview of what Irthlingborough Lakes and Meadows nature reserve will eventually look like once all the habitat improvement works are complete by taking a look at the Wildlife Trust’s fantastic new online panoramic visualisation by visiting wt360s.wildlifetrusts.org/slruser/nenevalley/

If you are interested in getting involved with on-going management of the nature reserve there are plenty of ways that you can help. Please contact the Wildlife Trust on 01604 405285, email claire.wylde@wildlifebcn.org or visit www.wildlifebcn.org for more information.

Buying with a Clear Conscience in Thrapston

Are you missing the Farmer’s Market? Well it’s back in Thrapston on November 1st so while we wait….We asked Toni from Clear Conscience Foods about her business.

conc5

What is it that you do Toni?

I produce a wide range of prepared, deli style items, such as scotch eggs, quiches, sausage rolls, salads, dips, savoury and sweet tarts, vegetable cakes and puffs and ready meals, using what is locally, seasonally and organically available. My produce is generally available at farmers’ markets in the region (Thrapston – 1st Sat of the month, Huntingdon – 2nd and 4th Fri of the month, St. Ives – 3rd Sat of the month, Higham Ferrers – last Sat of the month, and Stanwick Lakes – last Sun of the month), and I also do catering for private parties/events and am working on my picnic delivery service in time for next summer!

conc

How Do You Produce your Goods and Source Your Ingredients?

I’m very careful about where I source my ingredients and take the issue of sustainability and ethically sourced food extremely seriously. All of my flour is stoneground and organic and sourced from either Whissendine Mill in Rutland, or Fosters Mill in Cambs (www.fostersmill.co.uk). Equally, all of my eggs are organic and sourced from Kingsthorpe organic farm in Northants, as does all of the organic, 100% pork mince in my sausage rolls and scotch eggs. The vast majority of my fresh fruit and veg will be organic and provided by Riverford organic farm in Peterborough (www.riverford.co.uk) or Woodlands Organic Farm in Lincs (www.woodlandsfarm.co.uk).   Any fresh produce that is not sourced from one of these regular suppliers will be what I have picked up from fellow traders at local farmers’ markets – producers with whom I deal direct and know personally.

conc3

conc4

Tell us Why you do this…

Unfortunately, there are a lot of things which I fear the general public are unaware of when it comes to their food production, specifically food produced and sold en masse in the large supermarkets. The more I’ve learned about what goes on – from the chemical sprays directly on the fresh fruit and veg at the farm, to the routine use of antibiotics in livestock and then more chemicals and the modified atmospheres employed to sustain the shelf life on fresh produce – the more concerned I become.

I believe this heavy use of chemicals in our food is bad for our health. I believe there is a direct link between modern day, western illnesses such as stomach, colon, bowel and pancreatic cancers and this heavy reliance on chemicals in our food production. I believe food produced in this way is less nutrient rich and so does not nourish our bodies as well as it could.

There are social, environmental and economical concerns as well as health ones – farmers get a notoriously raw deal from supermarkets, who can then offer such low prices that local, independent producers and retailers cannot compete and are left by the wayside. Further afield, our tropical rainforests are being destroyed at an alarming rate, in part to make way for mass-scale soy production which is used to feed the cattle reared for cheap meat and meat products in our supermarkets.  Without exception (yup, even Waitrose!), all of our UK supermarkets sell meat which has been fed on GM produced crops which, given that GM produce is currently illegal and not deemed safe for human consumption across Europe, is extremely worrying for me. More worryingly, most people have no idea that their chicken or pork was reared on GM crops and some don’t even know what this means. This is not an accident; this is not information they want us to know and there’s a good reason for that.

clear

Thankfully, there’s an alternative!  Fresh, organic food from local producers has not been subject to heavy chemical sprays or unnatural processes to extend shelf life. It has not been transported half way across the world and held in storage in a modified atmosphere for six months before it reaches your table. As a result, it is tastier, cheaper and more nutrient rich and in buying it you are directly supporting your local community and contributing to your local economy.

conc2

I have been buying local, organic and seasonal produce for a long time now and have learned that living with the seasons does require some amount of creativity in the kitchen, so I’ve been working on new and interesting ways to use courgettes and kale when my favourite cucumbers and strawberries aren’t readily available! A few months ago I had the idea to bring some of these recipes to the public, since I’ve realised prepared, organic products such as quiches and scotch eggs are virtually non-existent, and that’s when my business was born! Now my mission statement is to make it easier for people to choose delicious, easy and convenient options such as ready meals, ready made salads and dips without worrying about the hidden nasties involved in their production so they can enjoy my treats with a Clear Conscience!
