East Northamptonshire Residents keep Landfill Levels Low

Thanks to the recycling efforts of residents, East Northamptonshire has been rated as one of the best in the country for low landfill levels.

The Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) released a report this month confirming East Northamptonshire is in the top 10 for the Lowest Household Waste Generation per Head (2013/14).

Collected household waste for East Northamptonshire came in at 292kg per person, with the lowest in the whole country at 255kg. The next best result in Northamptonshire came from Northampton Borough Council at 357kg per head, more than 65kg heavier than in this district.

Steven North, Leader of East Northamptonshire Council, said:

“This is great news.  Thank you to everyone for helping to achieve these excellent results. Your support really does matter and is making a real difference. We’re now asking our residents to rise to the challenge and recycle even more of their waste, by ensuring that they don’t put anything into their grey-lidded bin which can be recycled.”

In 2011, the council launched a new rubbish and recycling scheme which, amongst other changes, saw residents receive larger bins for recyclables. It is believed that changes in the service, including a bigger opportunity to recycle, have contributed to this result.

For more information about refuse and recycling, visit www.east-northamptonshire.gov.uk/waste  email waste@east-northamptonshire.gov.uk or call 01832 742026.

Planning Councillors Grant Irthlingborough West Application

An application for a major expansion to the west of Irthlingborough including 700 houses was granted by East Northamptonshire Council’s Development Control meeting on Monday, 24 November.

Members agreed with the officer recommendation to grant the application for a mixed use development which as well as housing, also covers commercial development for business, industrial and storage use, land for expansion of Huxlow Science College and drainage and highways infrastructure.

The application came to the Development Control committee following public consultation and councillors debated concerns around other development plans for the town and the need for appropriate infrastructure and facilities. They also considered petitions and letters objecting to the development.

SCOTTS OF THRAPSTON SEES BOOM IN SUMMERHOUSE SALES

Great Britain might not be famed for its glorious weather, but a leading joinery manufacturer today revealed a boom in summerhouse sales.

Scotts of Thrapston chairman David Scott said that the UK firm had sold more summerhouses in 2014 than in any other 12 month period in its 95 year history.

Mr Scott said that sales had soared by around 25 per cent – and added that it was pleasing to see solid sales across all summerhouses in the Scotts range.

The success was attributed to a hugely successful exhibition at RHS Chelsea Flower Show, and the fact that savvy buyers are now looking for extra value from their purchases.

Mr Scott, who is a third generation member of the family which founded Scotts of Thrapston in 1920, said: “It has been a fantastic year for us in terms of sales of summerhouses – the best in our history.

“2009 was a good year – but 2014 has even surpassed that. We are delighted.

“Of course, with seasonal products like this you see the bulk of sales between April and September. But what has been encouraging is that we have seen regular monthly sales right throughout the year.

“That is partly due to the milder winter and relatively good summer weather, but it’s also helped by the success of this year’s RHS Chelsea Flower Show, which was the best one we’ve exhibited at in 40 years.

“Our success is another clear sign that the economy is improving.”

Scotts of Thrapston is one of the country’s leading suppliers of specialist timber products, including equestrian buildings, roof structures, pavilions, garages, outbuildings and bespoke joinery.

The firm collaborated with designer Katie Alice at its shows and exhibitions this year, which included Chelsea Flower Show and RHS Hampton Court Palace Flower Show, giving customers the chance to see styled summerhouses on display.

Mr Scott said: “What we’re seeing is people are looking for value for their money and they want the better quality products.David Scott3

“They want to receive the personal service that we offer, and they want products that are going to stand the test of time.”

Scotts’ core summerhouse range has been strengthened by the introduction of a range of buildings designed in close partnership with the Royal Horticultural Society (RHS). In 2013 the company initially launched the RHS Centenary Arbour and RHS Centenary Summerhouse inspired by the 100th anniversary of the RHS Chelsea Flower Show.

Burghley summerhouse with lead effect glassfibre roofThis year the firm added to the range with the launch of The RHS Cosy Nook, which is made from pressure impregnated European redwood and measures 1.8 metres from front to back and two metres in width.  A range of seven heritage colour finishes are available and prices start at £2,995.

Mr Scott concludes: “The success of 2014 is hugely down to the dedication and commitment of our team here in Thrapston. We’re confident that 2015 will continue the upward trend and look forward to welcoming new customers and introducing them to the benefits of garden buildings and summerhouses.”

SNUFF OUT THE RISK THIS CANDLE FIRE SAFETY WEEK, SAYS NORTHAMPTONSHIRE FIRE AND RESCUE SERVICE

Northamptonshire Fire and Rescue Service is asking people to take care this Candle Fire Safety Week, which launches this week (November 17), and snuff out the risk of fire in their home.

With the days growing darker and winter setting in, a few candles scattered round the room can lend a warm glow to an evening in or add some festive cheer to the season’s celebrations.  flame

But with candle fires resulting in around 350 casualties each year and 40% of all fires started by candles resulting in a death or injury, Northamptonshire Fire and Rescue Service is encouraging people to take extra care with candles this winter.

The most important step you can take to keep yourself and your loved ones safe is to ensure your home has a working smoke alarm.

To prevent candle fires from starting in your home, you should make sure your candles are kept away from flammable materials like curtains and ensure candles are put out when you leave the room, even for a moment.

Baz Fox, prevention and community protection manager for Northamptonshire Fire and Rescue Service, said: “Candles are a typical sight in many homes, scenting our rooms and giving an atmospheric glow to cold winter nights.

“But it’s important to remember that a candle is not just a decorative feature. Left unattended, an open flame scenting your home could leave a trail of devastation.

“Place your lit candles with extra care, away from curtains, pets and children and always remember to put them out when you leave the room, even for a moment.

“Even with these precautions, it is vital to be prepared should the worst happen. A working smoke alarm can give you the vital time you need to get out, stay out and call 999. Keep yourself and your loved ones safe by testing your alarm regularly and by practicing your escape routes.”

To help you enjoy your candles safely, the Fire Kills campaign has the following advice:

  • Never leave lit candles unattended. Put burning candles out when you leave the room, and make sure they’re out completely at night.
  • Place your candles carefully. Make sure they are on a stable surface, out of the reach of pets and children, and keep them away from flammable objects like curtains, furniture, bedding and books.
  • Don’t move candles once they are lit
  • Do not burn several candles close together as this might cause the flame to flare
  • Burn candles in a well-ventilated room, out of drafts, vents or air currents. This will help prevent rapid or uneven burning, soot, and dripping.
  • Put candles out with a snuffer or a spoon – sparks can fly if you blow them out.
  • Always put scented candles in a heat resistant holder. These candles are designed to liquify when heated to maximise fragrance.
  • Fit a smoke alarm and test it regularly. A working smoke alarm can buy you valuable time to get out, stay out and call 999.
  • Make sure that everyone in your home knows what to do if a fire should occur– practise your escape route.

How do you know if you have Seasonal Affective Disorder?

Do you feel like a bear with a sore head now that the days are getting shorter and darker?

Answer these 12 simple questions to find out if you might be suffering from Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) symptoms.  Thinking about how you are in the colder, darker, winter months as compared to the summer months.

  1. Do you get grumpy if you have no sunshine at all in a week?
  2. Would you consider April to September your preferred half of the year?
  3. Do you have trouble getting up in the dark?
  4. Do you feel like hibernating; not going out or seeing people as much when the nights and mornings are dark?
  5. Do you eat more heavy/starchy/sweet foods during the winter months; so much so that you regularly have to do a spring weight-loss program?
  6. Do you pick up more bugs or colds or succumb to injury more easily in winter?
