Hospital Delighted by Results

Patients of a Northampton private hospital have given it their seal of approval in an independent survey.

Results of an annual survey carried out at BMI Three Shires Hospital over 2014 showed that 98.7 of patients who responded rated their overall quality of care as very good or excellent.D

The independent analysis, which was conducted by the market research company Quality Health, was based on a sample of more than 800 patients and measured patient satisfaction across a broad range of hospital services.

These included patients’ overall impression of admission, consultant care, imaging (X-ray) anaesthetists, theatre staff, accommodation and whether they, as patients, were treated with respect and dignity.

The survey also revealed that patients at BMI Three Shires  gave nursing care a major ‘thumbs-up’ with 97.2% rating it excellent or very good, while consultant surgeons and physicians received a 98.9% rating for the same  categories.

Dominic Bath, Executive Director the hospital said: “Patients are at the centre of everything we do at our hospital and this report is vital in helping us assess what we are getting right and, importantly, what we could do better.

“In this day and age people have very high expectations of the sort of care they should receive while in hospital. These sorts of scores show that we are meeting those expectations.

“Being in hospital is usually a stressful time and we do all we can to take away that stress and make the experience a positive one. It is a credit to all the staff here that their hard work is being recognised by the people who matter most, the patients.”

“We are all very proud of our hospital; everyone here goes above and beyond to ensure our patients are our priority, working hard to make each patient’s time with us as comfortable as possible. These results are something to be really proud of but we are continually refining our standards and will look to improve on this in the future.”

FREE Health Check Available

Northamptonshire County Council is urging eligible residents to make sure they take the opportunity to get their free NHS health check.

Everyone is at risk of developing heart disease, stroke, diabetes, kidney disease and some forms of dementia – the good news is that these conditions can often be prevented.

Health checks are like a midlife MOT. Even if people are feeling well now, it’s a chance to check that some of their body’s most important systems are all running smoothly and allows them to be better prepared for the future and to be able to take steps to maintain or improve their health.

Health checks are available to most people aged between 40 and 74, who don’t already have an existing vascular condition that is already being taken care of by their GP.

They only take around 20 to 30 minutes and during this time blood pressure, cholesterol and BMI will all be checked. People will also be asked some simple questions about their family history and any medication they are taking.

After the health check they will taken through the results and given personalised advice on how to lower any risks and stay healthy.gskm-042114-pencil-2-1088

Councillor Robin Brown, Northamptonshire County Council cabinet member for public health and wellbeing said: “At this time of year, lots of us think about our health and look to see what lifestyle changes we can make.

“One easy way to really improve your chances of living a healthier life is to make sure that you don’t miss out on a free NHS health check if you are entitled to one.

“Even if you’re feeling fit and well, it’s worth getting checked over to help lower the risk of certain conditions developing in the future.  It takes less than half an hour to have the health check, and can make a real difference to your health and wellbeing.”

Anyone interested in getting a free health check should visit www.northamptonshire.gov.uk/healthchecks to check if they are eligible and get details of how to book, or contact their GP surgery for more information.

Could you Help in an Emergency?

DO YOU HAVE SKILLS THAT COULD HELP NORTHAMPTONSHIRE PREPARE FOR AN EMERGENCY?

Northamptonshire County Council’s Emergency Planning team is encouraging people across the county to consider becoming a volunteer with its emergency resilience partners.

Today (Wednesday) saw the launch of the Northamptonshire Emergency Response Corps (NERC), a community organisation that brings together the various agencies involved in emergency response in the county.

Its aims are to make sure people in Northamptonshire are better prepared for an emergency, to test emergency plans through regular training exercises and to encourage more people to volunteer with the various emergency planning and welfare agencies involved.R

NERC’s members include the Northamptonshire 4X4 Response Team, the British Red Cross, Northampton Emergency Aid Team and Northants Search and Rescue.

Cllr André González de Savage, county council cabinet member for strategic infrastructure, economic growth and public protection, said: “The Northamptonshire Emergency Response Corps will enable the various highly-skilled and professional statutory and voluntary organisations involved with emergency planning to ensure we are best prepared to respond to an emergency, from a major fire or a flood to a missing person.

“Alongside agencies like the police, the fire service and the Environment Agency, the voluntary sector plays a vital role in emergency planning and we could not respond to some incidents without their expertise.

“There are a wide variety of volunteering opportunities available, from becoming a community resilience volunteer or a flood warden to staffing a reception centre for evacuees. We even have volunteer roles for those who want to help in the running of the group such as marketing and website management.

“I would encourage anyone who thinks they may have the skills to support our work to get in touch to find out more.”

Volunteers don’t need to commit a minimum amount of time a month, they just need to be on-call when they can. They will also receive regular training, information and support to maintain their skills and knowledge.

Further details about the Northamptonshire Emergency Response Corps and the volunteer roles available can be found at www.northamptonshire.gov.uk/getinvolved.

100 days until the Election – Make Sure You’re Registered to Vote

With only 100 days to go until the UK parliamentary and local government elections, East Northamptonshire residents are urged to register to vote.

On Thursday, 7 May voting will take place in all Parliamentary constituencies of the UK to elect Members of Parliament (MPs) and for local councillors in East Northamptonshire.

To be able to vote, you must be registered and you can do it online at www.gov.uk/register-to-vote  All you need is your National Insurance number, date of birth and address to register online.

Steven North, Leader of East Northamptonshire Council, says:

“Last year the Government rolled out Individual Electoral Registration across the UK which means each individual voter is now responsible for registering their own vote. Previously one registration form was sent to each property with the names of all eligible voters included on it but now each resident must register individually.

“For the most part residents were automatically transferred over to the new register as their identities were confirmed using data held by the Department for Work and Pensions. We have recently written to all households in the district providing details of who is currently registered at those properties. However, for those who have not been included, it’s important they provide their details as soon as possible so that they can vote in this year’s elections.”

A few days after completing your online form, you will receive a letter confirming that your registration was successful or asking for more information if that is required. If you have provided your email address or phone numbers, you may be contacted that way instead.

East Northamptonshire Council Approves Tenant Protection Scheme

Tenants, and those thinking of renting a property, are being urged by East Northamptonshire Council to ensure their agent is affiliated to a government approved redress scheme.

Since 1 October 2014, letting agents and property management agents in England have been required to register with one of three such schemes, designed to provide a free, independent service for resolving disputes between letting agents and their customers.

This compulsory requirement comes as a response to an increasing number of complaints from tenants and landlords about letting agents.

The schemes give tenants somewhere to turn if they have concerns about discrimination, hidden fees, missing deposits or other disputes – and, importantly, receive compensation if it is due.

Letting agents and property management agents have a choice of three approved redress schemes to join:

Steven North, leader of East Northamptonshire Council, said:

“Most tenants and landlords are happy with the service they get from their letting agent.  But the changes mean that – in the few cases where people have complaints – they now have somewhere to go with their concerns.

“It’s our responsibility to ensure that letting agents are all abiding by the rules and providing the sort of service and reassurance their clients have a right to expect.”

Agents who have yet to join one of the approved redress schemes are reminded that they should do so immediately as non-compliance could result in a fine of £5,000.
