Talented Jed turns up to The Deco as a dancer

Talented Jed turns up to The Deco as a dancer, and lands himself a part as an actor, such was the impression he made!

Northampton student Jed Marshall made such a big impression when he appeared in the Deco Theatre’s Christmas Panto ‘Snow White’ last December, he was swiftly signed up for their Spring spectacular, ‘Aladdin’.

The Deco prides itself on giving opportunities to talented local performers who they believe deserve the chance, and had no second thoughts in offering 20-year-old Jed the role of The Genie in next month’s show, which runs from April 7-9.

“It’s a great opportunity, and I’m really looking forward to it,” said Jed, who lives with his parents in East Hunsbury. “I loved being part of ‘Snow White’, and I loved performing at The Deco – it’s a lovely theatre with a great atmosphere, and everybody was so nice, the cast, and the team behind the scenes.”

It was pure chance that Jed actually had the opportunity in last Christmas’s Panto. “Someone I know who goes to Unit 17 (Northampton Dance School) just happened to mention they were looking for a couple of male dancers for the Deco Panto,” he said. “So I got in touch, auditioned, and was offered a role in the show, and loved every minute of it.

“You could say I turned up as a dancer, and landed a part as an actor, but it’s all good, and – as I say – I’m really excited about it.”

Jill Roach, from Northampton based Stage Right Productions, who run The Deco Theatre, said Jed’s talent stood out immediately.

“We knew immediately we saw Jed we had chanced across a very talented young man, and that he was local to Northampton made it even better for us,” she said. “We love giving a break to local talent, and Jed is just that.

“He fitted in so well, and not only is he a very good dancer, he’s also a delightful young man, and we had no doubt that we wanted him to come back for ‘Aladdin’. He’ll be great, and the audiences will love him, as they will the rest of our cast.”

Jed was eight years old when he first started dancing, which he did with his twin brother, Aiden. They were taking the lead from their elder brother, Jordan, also an accomplished dancer, who performed with a dance group, ‘Ignition’, and took part in competitions both nationally and internationally.

“I’ve loved dancing over the years, and now, as well as performing, I’m also getting into teaching,” said Jed, who is studying dance at college. “If I don’t go into the entertainment business full time, I’d like to be a teacher one day, and I’m involved with two dance groups, the one where I first started, which is for eight to 16 year olds, and where I now do some teaching, and a charity group for 18-plus, where I dance, but do some teaching too.”

Jed will be performing in ‘Aladdin’ alongside his friend, Naomi Wilkins, who was also in ‘Snow White’, and is delighted to be working with Nick Cochrane, David McClelland, and Colin Ridgewell again.”

He said: “They were fantastic entertainers, and true pros – I learnt so much from working alongside them, and they’re all thoroughly nice people and very helpful.”
