New Chairman elected at East Northamptonshire Council
East Northamptonshire Council has a new chairman for 2014/15
Councillor Gill Mercer, who is district councillor for the Rushden Pemberton Ward, took over from outgoing chairman, Pam Whiting at the Annual Meeting of the Council for the Civic Year on Wednesday, 14 May. Cllr Marika Hillson was also named as Vice-Chairman at this meeting.
Cllr Mercer has lived in Rushden since 1977 and has been a district councillor for 11 years. She is also a Rushden Town Councillor and is active in the local Twinning with towns in Germany. She is Vice Chairman of Northamptonshire Groundwork Trust and a member of the Northamptonshire Parking Partnership.
Cllr Mercer is looking forward to showcasing the district and the work of the council at many events over the next 12 months with her consort and husband, Andy.
“I am looking forward to a rewarding year heading the council and promoting its name and, in addition, fundraising for my charity, Prostaid, a charity which helps sufferers of prostate cancer. Specifically, I am raising funds for a piece of diagnostic equipment for Kettering General Hospital.
“I hope to meet as many residents as possible at events and various functions throughout the year.”
Events already planned for the year include a Golf Day on 11 September and a Queen Tribute band on 27 December at Rushden Bowls Club.

New dog bins at local nature reserve
Two new dog bins were installed at Irthlingborough Lakes and Meadows nature reserve last week due to popular demand from local residents.
The Wildlife Trust for Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire and Northamptonshire has managed the reserve with funding from the Heritage Lottery Fund and SITA Trust since 2012. Since then they have been working to improve the site for wildlife and make it a more enjoyable place for people to visit.
Incidences of anti-social behaviour have fallen over the last two years but dog fouling has remained an issue at the site. Many local residents have complained about the problem saying that some owners do not pick up after their dog.
The bins at the reserve are provided and emptied by East Northamptonshire Council, with the help of Councillor Sylvia Hobbs who has funded one of the bins.
Ian Wilson, Reserves Officer at The Wildlife Trust, said “We hope that the bins will be convenient for most dog walkers that visit the reserve – one of the bins can be found on the path from Randall Close in Irthlingborough where it joins the old railway and the other is located along the Greenway cycle path where it crosses the old railway.
“The bins should encourage dog owners to clean up after their dog which will help to make the reserve an even more enjoyable place to visit for everyone.”

Save a lifebelt competition winners announced
A competition for young people to design a picture which will help prevent vandalism of lifesaving equipment along the River Nene saw over 270 entries submitted.
The competition was launched as part of a drowning-prevention project by East Northamptonshire Council, the Environment Agency and Northamptonshire County Council.
The challenge was for under 18s to design a message and/or a picture that will make a vandal or thief think twice before messing with lifebelts at locks and weirs. This equipment costs thousands of pounds and theft or vandalism of it puts lives in danger.
A panel of judges including East Northamptonshire Council Chairman Gill Mercer, Steve Jackson, Schools Swimming Manager at Northamptonshire County Council, Sue Cant –Nene and Lincolnshire Waterways Manager at the Environment Agency and Inspector Inam Khan, Sector Commander at Northamptonshire Police had the difficult task of selecting six winners who will have their design published and used in the centre of lifebelts available along the River Nene in East Northamptonshire. Each winner will also receive an Amazon voucher.
Winners from Rushden Community College are Zoe Brabant and Charlotte Rapkin. From Huxlow, Simone Masters and Emily Vincent who produced a joint design, as did Louis Hankins with Molly Schulze and Allysha Lane with Shannon Calder. Georgia Russell was also declared a winner. Highly Commended awards went to Maia Warren of Rushden Community College and Megan Roberts, Beth Fisher and Sinead O’Callaghan, all from Huxlow.
Cllr Gill Mercer said: “It was very difficult to choose from so many excellent designs. There were some very good strong messages even from the ones that didn’t win.”
Inspector Inam Khan added: “Schools should be commended for the high quality of designs and the effort that has been put in.”
Sue Cant concluded: “We’re really pleased to see such a high standard and variety of designs. The winning ones will be displayed at lock sites where people will see them and take notice of the messages. Well done to all of those who took part.”
The chosen designs will be put on the lifebelt holders on 19 June, ready for National Drowning Prevention Week 21-29 June.

New scheme to recycle garden rubbish
Occasional gardeners in East Northamptonshire can now sign up to a new garden waste collection service.
Alongside the wheeled bin collection scheme, East Northamptonshire Council has now launched a garden waste sack collection service which offers occasional gardeners the chance to have their waste recycled as and when needed.
Residents can dispose of grass cuttings, hedge trimmings, weeds, dead plants/flowers, prunings and leaves in the 75 litre compostable sacks, which cost £15 for 10.
Once filled, the council will collect three or more sacks at a time from the usual refuse collection point, within 10 working days of being notified. Residents will be advised of the collection day in advance.
Chair of the Waste and Recycling Working Party, Glenn Harwood MBE, said: “If you only garden a few times throughout the year, this is a flexible, convenient and affordable way to dispose of your garden rubbish. What’s even better is that all of the green waste we collect is taken to a local composting facility to make an agricultural soil conditioner so you’re helping the environment too.”
East Northamptonshire Council also offers a fortnightly wheeled bin recycling collection of green waste for £51.50 for a year.

AFC Rushden & Diamonds Community 3rd annual Fun Day Approaches
On the 14th of June AFC Rushden & Diamonds will hold their 3rd Annual Fun Day at Kennedy’s Sports Fields in Finedon, from 10am.
The day will incorporate all AFC’s teams from under 6’s up to under 18’s and the multi-disability team and will involve upwards of 250 players.
As well as being a festival of football and fun, the annual awards for all the teams will be presented to the community players by representatives from the first team and other local dignitaries.
There will be fun events throughout the day including a bouncy castle and face painting for the younger ones as well as “soak the coach” and “take one for the team” which gives the players the chance to get their own back on the coaches for all the hard training sessions throughout the season.
We will have various stalls setup and raffles going on throughout the day as well as an AFC Rushden & Diamonds stand for anyone who wants to know more about the club.
Commenting on previous Fun Days Chairman of the Community Football Matt Culwick said;
“The last two Fun Days have been a great success and this year with an influx of volunteers we are looking to make the day even bigger and better than before. The players really enjoy the day and the look on the faces of the ones who have worked hard to receive an annual award makes all the effort everyone puts in worthwhile. It is a great day for club too as it is one of the few occasions where all the age groups come together and interact with each other creating a fantastic atmosphere. I can’t wait for this year’s event which I am sure will be another resounding success”
The Community side of the club has recently been boosted by an influx of volunteers but always welcome more; you don’t have to have a child playing football just a desire to help your local community and to be part of something amazing.
So if you have a child who is looking for a great club to start playing football or if you would just like to get involved then please contact Matt Culwick
