The Little Black Dress

With thoughts of Christmas creeping into our minds and lots of party wear in the shops I thought it was the perfect time to talk about the LBD

  1. Think about colour – this may seem an odd thing to say when I’m talking about the ‘little black dress’ but if you know black is not the best colour on you, perhaps you should consider an alternative. This could be influenced by the current fashion trends so may make your job easier or more challenging. For example, there’s lots of red around this year. However, if you need something a little more subtle navy is always a good option, or what about forest green?

If black isn’t so great on you make sure the neckline is low and it’s in a fine fabric like lace of something sheer. This will allow for some of your flesh to show through and think about wearing a necklace. With a bit of makeup and dim party lights it’ll work better than say if you were wearing a black top during the day in the office with the harshness of florescent lighting.

  1. What about style – choose one to flatter your body shape:
  • If you have wide thighs look for a full or A-line style
  • If you have a slim waist – don’t hide it!
  • If you have big boobs choose a v-neck or scoop neck
  • If you have good legs wear something tighter and finishing on your knee
  • If you carry weight around your middle look for a shift style

  1. What about underwear? – Don’t leave this to the last minute, especially if you need some sort of ‘spanx’ support. There are lots of options available these days but make sure you road test it first. Don’t wait till party night to discover that you can’t eat in it!! Comfort is key – you should forget what you’ve got on and enjoy the moment. How can you radiate confidence if you’re struggling to breathe?

Another option is tummy control tights.

Remember you want your dress to ‘skim, not cling’

And finally, don’t leave it till the last minute when panic sets in and you purchase something that ‘will do’ – you want a dress that when you catch a glimpse of yourself in the mirror it makes you smile (or even do a little jig, them you know you’ve got it spot on) and it will last the test of time!
