Adrian Teal – The new face(s) on Thrapston High Street

Last week, we went to visit the little offices above Bletsoes as we knew that someone new was in town.

Adrian Teal is a caricaturist, cartoonist, illustrator and author, with clients around the world. He has been fully freelance since 1996, with a studio in the centre of Northampton. He is head of 3D celebrity caricature design on the award-winning ITV show Big Heads, which first aired on ITV1 in April, 2017.

Adrian’s articles on history have appeared in The Lancet, and History Today. His freelance illustration clients have included the band Madness, Mercedes Benz, UBS, the comedy club Jongleurs, and Anglia TV. He has produced illustrations and political cartoons for national and international publications such as The Sunday Telegraph, Penthouse, The Scotsman, The Times, The Guardian, Time Out, The Sun, and The Daily Mail. In addition, he has drawn regular cartoons for History Today and has written about eighteenth-century satire for that magazine.

Mr Spock thrapstonAs a child, Adrian was tutored at British TV’s Spitting Image Workshop. Spitting Image’s producer was the multi-award-winning John Lloyd, best known for his work on such iconic comedy shows as Not the Nine O’Clock News, The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, Blackadder, and QI. One of Adrian’s proudest moments was co-writing material with John for the QI Annuals. Adrian has produced a cover and written/illustrated historical spreads for the QI books. He has illustrated for QI merchandise and marketing material as well as for the TV show itself.

Adrian helped with the launch of publishing house Unbound by writing and illustrating his first book, The Gin Lane Gazette, a compendium of bawdy, scandalous, true stories from a fictional 18th-century newspaper, published in 2012. He has spoken at events and venues such as the Hay and the Chiswick literary festivals; Oxford University; and London institutions Dr. Johnson’s House, Benjamin Franklin House, Handel House, and Bart’s Pathology Museum. He has also been a contestant in the internationally renowned ArtPrize competition in the USA, in which he entered a six-by-eight-foot caricature painting about the history of America’s most famous emblems.

In relation to his caricature work, Adrian has appeared on several British TV channels such as BBC1, Channel 5, and Sky One, and he has been an interviewee on BBC Radio 4 and BBC local radio. He contributes illustrations and material to Dr Lindsey Fitzharris’s YouTube series Under the Knife, which takes a humorous look at our medical past by combining traditional documentary with CG animation and artwork. At the time of writing, the channel has had 234,000 views and already has 18,000 subscribers.

Adrian is available for local work and private pictures, so this could be rather a cool idea for a Christmas present!

Thrapston is fast becoming quite an arty place!
