An Interview with Page Owner & Healer – Helen Dawson

nene local editorI’m Helen and I run Nene Local Magazine – affiliated to the ‘Welcome to’ pages on Facebook such as Welcome to Thrapston.  As most of you know, Nene Local supports the local community, running stories of local interest, charity events, lost and found and more, I offer businesses the chance to advertise on the site and pages which finances the magazine.

However, I do have a bit of a ‘double life’.  No, I don’t wear a cape and fight crime but I do run a separate business that you might be interested in learning about…

So here I am, interviewing myself!!

What is your other business Helen?

I run AmbaScarlett Holistic Healing and Animal Healing

This seems very different to running a magazine, how did this all come about?

Well, I am still hugely passionate about local issues so wanted to continue the magazine, but I trained in Reiki and Reflexology around 14 years ago and felt a growing desire to start using these skills again.

Where do you run your business?

I have a room in Islip that I work from each Monday and I am mobile in and around the Thrapston area the rest of the week.  I didn’t want to work from my home as I have a dog and not everyone likes dogs.  I also wanted to help people who perhaps could not get out and about much or didn’t want to leave home come for an appointment, but equally I wanted a tranquil room for some of the time for those people who might have lively pets, children, live in parents etc who just wanted to relax and have a little ‘me time’ away from everything.  I enjoy offering the best of both!

What treatments do you do?

I offer Reiki and Reflexology and a few variants from those.  Reiki is a Japanese energy healing system, where the client is fully clothed and relaxing on my recliner, I place my hands upon them in various positions and the healing energy flows through me.  I always say to people, just give it a go!  Even the most sceptical person feels something – often a very deep relaxation.  Reiki can be suitable for emotional issues such as anxiety and depression but also physical issues too.helen dawson healer

Reflexology is where I massage and apply pressure to certain pressure points on your feet which in theory are related to points around your body, to promote healing and feelings of well-being.helen dawson healer

I also offer reiki healing to animals.  I am happy to discuss any of these before someone commits to a treatment.

There are other treatments in the pipeline too so keep up to date by liking www.facebook.com/ambascarlett

What is Animal Reiki?

Depending on who you ask, the answers may be different as it is quite a personal treatment to give (and receive).  For me, I invite the animal to my Reiki space, either using thoughts or words, and the animal either agrees and accepts treatment or refuses – both of which are fine.  The Reiki treatment is a meeting of hearts, reiki healing is sent from the practitioner (me) to the animal through my hands and heart.  Animals will let me know where they want the Reiki and move their bodies to show me.  It never ceases to delight me when I see an animal totally relax into the treatment, as when relaxation occurs then the body can begin to heal itself.  Owners are often amazed to see their animal’s reaction.

How are you different to other salons or therapists?

I consider myself a healer or mender rather than a therapist.  I often get told “I’ve had reflexology/reiki before but never like this!”  It is something, I feel I was born to do rather than trained to do – although, of course I am fully trained, registered and insured!helen dawson healer

I also feel my life leading up to this point helps me empathise with people, there is no problem or issue someone can talk about that will shock or surprise me, and I make a safe and comfortable space for people to just sit and chat if they wish.

So, do you have time for hobbies?

Self-care, particularly as a therapist, is hugely important. I enjoy meditation and mindfulness, which is interlinked with what I do, and I practice yoga at least once a week.  Being able to take myself off into the local area walking my dog is very important to me, it helps me shed the day, let go of everyone’s separate issues and gives me time to ground myself.  I often find my best ideas pop up during a dog walk as my head is ‘in the moment’ and not busy thinking about day to day things.  We have a family boat on the River Great Ouse and we love the peace and tranquillity of a boating holiday around the Cambridgeshire and Norfolk areas.  I love to paint stones too, it’s a very therapeutic hobby!helen dawson healer
