Do you ever find yourself saying ‘stop the world I need to get off’? We all lead busy lives, work, children, home and then trying to find time for yourself is hard, in fact lots of us feel guilty if we do something just for ourselves!
Close your eyes for a moment and think ‘what did I last do just for me?’ Maybe you found time to paint a picture, go for a walk or just have a quiet coffee alone. If you honestly can’t remember the last time you had some ’me time’ this article has news for you.
I thought I was OK “I have a daily dog walk which I enjoy” then I realised just how much thinking I do on the walk, planning the next article in Nene Local, who will I call this afternoon, how can I gain more advertisers – lots of business thoughts rush round my head. What’s more, if you know me, you know I have fingers in many pies, so while I think I’m on this relaxing dog walk, I am literally role-playing things for at least four different businesses I run round in my head!
Sue Royle who runs www.tranquilitytime.co.uk suggested I go on one of her retreats. I’d had them recommended to me before and wondered if it was something I would enjoy? As my partner was away for the weekend, I could only do the morning and not the whole day – doggie needed walking and I only leave her for a few hours on her own in any one day.
Here’s a warning, this article now gets a bit spiritual……
I packed my bag with yoga mat (I didn’t need it), blanket (Sue provides these if you forget), my chi ball (you could take cushion or pillow, I just prefer this under my head) and my water bottle. I got my busy, full head and me into the car and off I went…. Taking a wrong turn on the way to the Arc Cabin in Elton I ended up in the midst of some local cycle race, sat nav playing up and feeling truly stressed. I even considered phoning Sue, making my apologies and going home.
Glad I didn’t! I persevered, found the Arc Cabin (It is actually easy to find, so don’t be put off!!). On entering I was warmly welcomed with herbal tea – I could have chosen coffee or ‘normal’ tea – just because you’re on a retreat it’s not all herbal tea and biscuits made from wood shavings…although you might find yourself hugging a tree…
The Arc Cabin is idyllic, by the river, in the woods – I want to live there!
The morning comprised of guided meditation, gentle yoga, healing meditation plus after I’d left they had a forest walk, yoga nidra and an amazing sound bath.
Everyone is relaxed, you can wear comfy clothes, make up/no make up, as one lady said bra/no bra!! Just be comfy!
My own signs and symbols
I had wondered whether to write about my own real experiences during the morning as they’re personal to me but decided to write about them, so you get the best idea of what it’s all about. No knowledge of meditation is required, no knowledge or experience of anything at all is required to be honest.
Our first guided meditation took us into a very relaxed state (if you fall asleep it’s OK! No Judgement) Once we were completely relaxed Sue asked us to think of a mantra to say a few times to ourselves. She gave a few examples in case anyone was panicking that they could not think of anything. As you’re so relaxed, almost in a trance state, it’s likely words will pop into your head – mine was BE STILL, as I have such a busy old head most of the time it made me smile, I knew it was Be Still with my thoughts rather than my body. I felt quite enlightened that my brain had given me such a good nudge.
After this we broke for some more tea, coffee, water etc and a biscuit. We were invited to use the cards if we wanted to, on offer were angel cards, manifesting cards, and more. I shuffled a pack and chose a card – which was all about stilling your mind. OK……so now I’m getting into this…
We had a gentle yoga session, suitable for any level, lots of laughter as we held hands to do Pose of a Tree and Flying Bird. Everyone joined in, no one felt out of their depth, you could tell. Sue is very nurturing on her retreats, being very aware of people’s expressions and body language and makes sure everyone is OK.
Our healing meditation was beautiful, a lovely guided pathway into deep relaxation. We ‘met’ a person or animal in the woods during our trance, mine was a baby deer. Sue got us to ask our messenger for their message and I got ‘daily’ very quickly from the deer, I also got his name was Shaun (which led me to have an inner giggle as I thought Shaun the Fawn).
To some readers, this article might be going too deep into spiritual stuff but if you’re in the slightest bit interested or intrigued, I’d recommend Sue Royle to take you on your first journey.
At the next break, I sadly had to leave. I picked a card before I left and got the image of a shark on the card, I thought, that this wasn’t as good as the last card, I don’t see anything shark like in me at all.
So my messages are Be Still, Daily – I’m taking this into my work for the week ahead.
The drive home through the Northamptonshire countryside was lovely, nothing like the journey there. I still feel relaxed today and am putting some things into practice.
My dog walk today was special, we spent time together, any business thoughts or house-work thoughts got pushed aside. They entered my head, but I deliberately made my brain still. I enjoyed taking photos, I enjoyed watching the dog try to get into the mud as I guided her round the puddles…. I came back feeling really happy and quite literally full of the joys of spring, as the sun is out, and the wind has dropped.
On my return I looked at my photos, and the one of the orange tipped tree tops, has one solitary cloud in it, it is in the shape of a shark (it is to me!) …… maybe I should take notice of the shark symbolism…. I’m off to look it up!
I will just add, I have now booked another retreat!! No ties at home so I can stay all day – I really cannot wait!
